| Things That Stop Teams - Myths |
|
Seven things that get in the way of teams. What to stay away from when dealing with teams.
1. Teams can direct themselves - This is so untrue. Any team left to themselves will begin to break down. If it were true supervisors and coaches would have been gone long ago. Instead teams needs attention, praise, practice, accountability and someone to care. 2. Team member participation can be forced - well kind of but not with a member giving 100%. People have to buy into the team and know each is a valued member. The individual needs to know that what happens and the work performed matters. 3. Employees don't want to be involved - they absolutely want to be involved. They want to be asked their opinion. They want to solve problems. 4. Team leadership is democratic - no it's not. It really isn't. Nor should it be. It actually helps the team to have the full responsibility rest on the coach or leader. There are times that a decision just needs to be made. 5. Teams can continue error-free - though there will periods of just excellent work there is going to be a mistake. Even high performers get tired or distracted at some time and some thing is missed. When teams are doing very well this is often when they get less attention but the same attention should be given no matter what is happening. 6. Good teams are very expensive - this is actually when they cost the least. All the support and equipment has been paid for and people are staying. To build a team has cost but once built and working the costs should stabilize. The reason why retention is important. 7. Teaching can stop - never. If teaching stops on a team the members will become bored. There needs to be new projects, or re-evaluations of how things are working. Things that get the brains working are always beneficial. |
